Guide to Measurements

Length

Both humans and hyarmi use the same system of length measurement.

Unit of MeasurementImperial EquivalentMetric Equivalent
Nail≈ 0.5 in≈ 1.3 cm
Width (6 nails)≈ 3 in≈ 7.6 cm
Length (17 widths)≈ 4 ft 3 in≈ 1.3 m
Span (5 lengths)≈ 21 ft 3 in≈ 6.5 m
League (870 spans)≈ 3.5 mi≈ 5.6 km
  • Nail is derived from the width of an avarii (or human) pointer fingernail.
  • Width is based upon the width of a hyarmi hand.
  • Length is based upon the height of an average hyarmi. This term has been substituted in the Dominion with stride.
  • Span is derived from the wingspan of an average ava.

Avarii in the Federated Enclaves (Oversea) used a different system of measurement.

Unit of MeasurementImperial EquivalentMetric Equivalent
Quill≈ 0.2 in≈ 4.7 mm
Short feather (14 quills)≈ 2.6 in≈ 6.6 cm
Long feather (14 short feathers)≈ 3 ft≈ 0.9 m
Span (7 long feathers)≈ 21 ft 3 in≈ 6.5 m
League (870 spans)≈ 3.5 mi≈ 5.6 km
Day flight (98 leagues)≈ 343 mi≈ 552 km
  • Quill is based upon feather quill width.
  • Short feather and long feather describe the length of covert feathers and primary feathers respectively.
  • Span is derived from the wingspan of an average ava.

Time

Time measurements are shared between all races and nations. While familiar terms are used for the reader’s ease of understanding, hours and minutes on Huavaen are not identical to our SI hours and minutes.

A more literal interpretation would call a second a pulse (hyarmi resting heartbeat). A minute would be called a pause. An hour would be called a quarter (of a four-hour watch).

Each day begins at dawn, which can be interpreted literally as sunrise, or more precisely as the equivalent of our 6 a.m.

Lunar Calendar

The lunar calendar is shared between humans and hyarmi, though some nations begin the new year on a different date.

  • Days begin at dawn.
  • Since 922 DH, months have started on the new of the Sister.
  • Each month is twenty-nine or thirty days.
  • Weeks are seven days in length and approximately a quarter of a month.
  • The term fortnight is used to either indicate two weeks or half a month (fifteen days).
  • Neither the days of the week nor the weeks have any names.
  • Most humans and hyarmi can estimate the date of the month by seeing the phase of the Sister.
  • Each year has either twelve or thirteen months.
  • For the hyarmi and most human nations, the new year begins on the new of the Sister after the winter solstice.

  • Tryturn
  • Kuarturn
  • Kuinturn
  • Hafturn
  • Septurn
  • Octurn
  • Noventurn
  • Deketurn
  • Chilturn
  • Dosenturn
  • Odturn (does not occur in every year)

Solar Calendar

A solar calendar was used by the avarii of the Federated Enclaves (Oversea). Each new year began near the spring equinox. Each year contains thirteen months of four seven-day weeks each, with an additional fragment month called Bereft. Bereft was usually one day long but was extended to four days in length every fourteen years to keep the calendar aligned with the sun.

The avarii named the weeks of the month, but not the days of the week, alluding to the seasons of the year.

  • Stirring Week
  • Thriving Week
  • Fading Week
  • Slumber Week

The names of the months echo the primal forces observed in various avarii rituals. Due to being a flighted race, the wind (air) gains more emphasis than earth, water, or fire.

  • Rousing Wind
  • Life Renewal
  • Earth Succor
  • Searing Wind
  • Bereft
  • Light Growth
  • Fire Brightness
  • Moisture Wind
  • Death Dispersing
  • Water Music
  • Snow Wind
  • Dark Concealment
  • Creator Sustaining
  • Star Splendor

Other Measurements

Weight measurements are highly variable between regions and nations and are only used in certain communities.

The hyarmi use the following system of weight measurement, sometimes adopted by humans.

Unit of MeasurementImperial EquivalentMetric Equivalent
Finger weight≈ 1 oz≈ 34 g
Arm weight (50 finger weights)≈ 3.75 lb≈ 1.7 kg
Full weight (20 arm weights)≈ 75 lb≈ 34 kg
Aid weight (7 full weights)≈ 525 lb≈ 238 kg
  • Finger weight is based upon the weight of a newborn hyarmi before it enters the mother’s pouch.
  • Arm weight is based upon the weight of a cub newly emerged from the mother’s pouch.
  • Full weight is derived from the average weight of an adult hyarmi.
  • Aid weight references the weight of a hyarmi pony.
